What Can Aquaphor Do For My Lips?

Is Aquaphor good for lips?

The basic answer is that it can be beneficial for your lips because it contains ingredients that can nourish dry, cracked lips. And we all know how prone we are to getting chapped skin on our lips.

Just like the rest of the skin on your body, your lips need moisture to stay healthy. But, unlike the rest of your skin, your lips don’t contain oil and sweat glands that are vital in providing that moisture.

In addition, the skin of your lips is thinner than on the rest of your body, making it more prone to cracking and bleeding.

Irritation can occur for a variety of reasons. Harsh weather, vitamin deficiencies, ill-fitting dentures, side effects from medications, and even chemicals in your lipsticks can cause rashes, itchiness or clogged pores.

Aquaphor is also ideal for the lips, the skin surrounding the lips and anyone with sensitive skin (or sensitive lips, for that matter). Its formula is free from fragrances and preservatives.

So if you have dry and chapped lips, this might just help you out!

Aquaphor Healing Ointment vs. Lip Repair Balm

Some of you may be more comfortable using a product that is specifically designed for the lips. As great as the healing ointment may be, one drawback may be having to use your fingers to apply this type of Aquaphor on lips.

The lip repair balm comes in a squeeze tube and gives you the option to use the tip applicator or your fingers. The applicator may be a little more hygienic if your hands aren’t clean.

The Aquaphor lip repair balm also contains nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that you may find appealing and can help cracked lips. It contains the antioxidants vitamins C and E, and castor oil and shea butter. Vitamin C is well-known in the skin care community for its ability to support collagen synthesis. Combined with Vitamin E, it is a powerful free-radical fighter. Lots of nourishing vitamins added into the formulation of this one.

Because the lip repair balm adds a hint of sheen to your lips, it acts more like a lip product instead of a body product. If you’re prone to sun burns or want an anti-aging boost, choose the formula that includes sunscreen. Who knows? Your chronically dry chapped lips may be the result of sun damage, and it’s important to keep lips protected from UV rays anyway.

Either way, the formula of the Aquaphor lip repair balm contains the same occlusive properties of the healing ointment to keep lips moisturized.

On the go? Try the Aquaphor lip repair stick to make application easier and less messy. This also keeps super chapped lips hydrated, whether in hot or cold weather (after all, our badly chapped lips don’t necessarily choose a climate). It is fragrance free and can relieve dryness and soothe chapped skin around the mouth as well.

How Do I Use Aquaphor for My Lips?

Because everyone’s needs will vary, you will need to experiment to see how best to use Aquaphor to relieve dryness.

You may find you’re reaching for it several times a day or may find a good slathering overnight is enough. You may like to apply a thin layer underneath or on top of your lipstick, especially those drying liquid lipsticks.

The manufacturer instructs you to use as needed, so have at it. Apparently, you can’t apply too much.

Even though Aquaphor is used to treat minor cuts and burns, the manufacturer suggests not using the product on your cracked lips if you have open wounds or are bleeding. You should wait until the skin has healed before applying Aquaphor.

If you want to use Aquaphor healing ointment on lips, just use it like any other lip balm; apply a thin layer on dry chapped lips. You can also apply the Aquaphor lip repair ointment after you exfoliate your smackers of dead skin cells.

How Does Aquaphor Work?

As the full product name states, this product is an ointment. Unlike creams and lotions, ointments are semi-solid formulas designed to form a barrier on the skin. This barrier not only traps moisture and prevents evaporation, but it also allows damaged skin time to heal.

According to the company’s website, the main ingredient in Aquaphor is petrolatum. If you’ve ever used Vaseline brand petroleum jelly, you are familiar with this ingredient.

Petrolatum‘s consistency makes it an ideal ingredient for Aquaphor because it aids in relieving and preventing dryness. The sticky emollient texture also helps the other ingredients in the formula penetrate the skin, thus increasing its effectiveness.

In addition to its occlusive ingredients, Aquaphor contains other ingredients that are known for their skin nourishing and healing properties. Among them, panthenol and glycerin are stand outs.

Panthenol helps enhance the skin’s regeneration and repair processes. According to Aquaphor’s website, panthenol is “proven to considerably improve symptoms of skin irritation such as dryness, roughness, scaling and redness.”

Glycerin is a powerful humectant, helping to draw water from the air into your skin. Unless you are allergic, both of these ingredients should be at the top of anyone’s list who is looking for an effective moisturizer.

Another ingredient, Bisabolol is a chemical found in chamomile and has anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe skin.

Can I Just Use Petroleum Jelly On My Lips?

Now that we’ve shed some light on can you use Aquaphor on your lips, can you also put petroleum jelly on your lips if you don’t have Aquaphor?

Petroleum jelly is a highly effective ointment to help prevent healthy skin from becoming parched skin. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to find in most stores. It does a great job preventing moisture loss and adding a layer of protection against harsh wind and cold.

Petroleum jelly is also found in many lip balms. It is added along with other ingredients in the formulation of lip balms and it’s likely that if you check you favorite one, you’ll find petroleum jelly.

What it can’t do is add moisture or help restore health to your skin. Petroleum jelly doesn’t contain any of the humectants, moisturizing ingredients or hydrating properties found in Aquaphor.

In addition, petroleum jelly can clog your pores. If you’re prone to acne, you may want to steer clear of using it on your face. Just wear lip balm!

So, Can I Put Aquaphor on My Lips?

The short answer to the question, “can Aquaphor be used on lips” is yes, you can indeed do so.

Is hot or cold weather making your lips dry? Is it the result of lip licking? Or do you have naturally sensitive lips? Aquaphor can help you with your smackers, to soothe dry cracked lips. It’s an easy and accessible dry lips treatment you can do for yourself.

There are lots of ingredients in Aquaphor that can be beneficial to your skin. It can also soothe chapped lips. Although you should not apply Aquaphor to open wounds and any sites that are bleeding, it is generally safe to use on your lips. It soothes chapped lips until they are completely healed. But when in doubt, use the Aquaphor lip repair or the Aquaphor lip repair stick instead, for soft lips.

The topic of dry chapped lips probably won’t come up easily in any conversation. In fact, you probably won’t give it much thought until your lips become irritated, red or cracked. When this happens, you may find yourself reaching for your lip balm more often than that expensive red lipstick to alleviate the uncomfortable tight feeling. Or will you start licking your lips every five minutes to try and mask the dry flaky skin?

Whatever condition your lips are in, you don’t have to suffer. There are so many over-the-counter products on the market that are designed to help moisturize, heal or prevent dry lips. You just have to find the right one.

So, would Aquaphor replace your other lip balms?

  1. Hope you’re well too, Pablo!

I had no idea they didn’t have this in Europe! Maybe just in certain stores that get stock from America? Thanks for verifying that it works for you as well!

  2. Hi there! Hope you’re doing well!

Oooh my I really miss this, I used to buy it a lot back in the day in America but I haven’t seen this product in Europe, anyway I think I could have something similar. The best product for winter, sometimes I have dry patches (and dry lips too) and I could really use a bit of Aquaphor. Thanks for confirming that we can do that. Anyway I already have some similar products. I also use a similar product on my elbows 🙂

  3. I prefer not to use petroleum based products on my lips as I don’t find them helpful at all but it’s good to know it’s an okay option if I’m ever in a pinch x

  4. I literally have a tub of this product beside my computer as I read this! I love Aquaphor! I originally bought it for dry skin on my hands, but have since used it on my lips when I didn’t have lip balm handy. It works great!

  5. Oh no, so sorry to hear about it, but at least that’s one product you know for sure that’s not for you!

  6. Oh this is interesting.
But I already got some bad allergies to my lips and face skin so now I prefer to not put any lip balm or sunscreen on it.
But I’m sure It may works good for others.
    xx
