How to Get Thicker Hair

Learning a little more about the anatomy of hair is important before explaining what you can do to get thicker hair.

Hair is made from a protein called keratin (which you may know is also what makes up your nails).  We have hair follicles made up of proteins, and our hair grows from roots at the bottom of these follicles.

Everyone’s hair is different.  Some individuals have very thick, dense hair, while others have thin hair that is more sparsely spread out over their head.  A variety of factors can impact the type of hair you have, namely genetics.  But, health and other factors can contribute to hair loss and thinning, so you may be able to take some steps to reverse these effects and get your hair to grow in thicker.

How Can I Get Thicker Hair Naturally?

“Can I get thicker hair naturally” is a question many individuals with thin or thinning hair have.  And, yes there are some natural remedies that can help increase hair growth to leave you with a thicker and fuller head of hair.

We’ll share some top answers to the “can thin hair become thick again naturally” question in the next few sections, so keep reading!

How Do I Thicken My Fine Hair?

One of the keys to thickening fine hair and enjoying a full head of hair is proper nutrition.

Eating a well-balanced diet and making sure you are getting plenty of healthy fats, omega 3’s, biotin, vitamin B5, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E can help hair grow in thicker and healthier.  Ideally, all of these vitamins and nutrients should come from the foods you eat, but sometimes it may be necessary to add some vitamin supplements to your routine to help make sure you’re getting enough.

Another idea when you’re looking for how to increase hair density is to take a break from bleaching, coloring, or other chemical treatments.  These hair treatments can damage hair.  They make the hair weaker and more likely to break.  When hairs break and fall out, it means your hair density will be lower than it otherwise would be.

How to Make Your Hair Healthy and Thick

Ready for another tip for how to make hair fluffy, healthy,  and thick?  Start by focusing on getting your scalp healthy.  Giving yourself a scalp massage every week (or scheduling one with a professional) can increase blood flow.  When blood flow is increased, it can help facilitate hair growth.

Using some essential oils along with your massage may also speed up the process.  Try using a few drops of rosemary oil or cedarwood oil with a carrier oil and massage the two oils into your scalp.  You should let the oil mixture sit on your scalp for about 30 minutes before washing it out.

How to Make Hair Thicker and Longer

Did you know that if you can make your hair thicker by brushing it regularly, it can help it grow longer?

Brushing exfoliates the scalp and increases blood flow and circulation.  It can also assist in transferring the natural oils found on your scalp throughout each hair strand.  Together, these benefits can help encourage the growth of new hair and keep the hairs you already have healthy.  Choosing a gentle brush, such as a boar-bristle brush, can keep you from damaging or breaking the hairs.

You can also be very gentle with your hair to keep it from breaking.  Avoid using a standard bath towel to dry your hair, and opt for a microfiber towel or t-shirt instead.  Additionally, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase can also reduce hair breakage.

How to Make Hair Stronger and Thicker

Heated styling tools can really damage hair and make it more brittle.  More brittle hair is more likely to break, leaving you with thinner, less dense hair.  When possible, avoid using heated styling tools, and use a heat protectant if you absolutely need to use heat on your hair.

Additionally, some hairstyles can also damage your hair.  Tight ponytails and other styles can create tension and cause hair to break.  Opt for looser buns and ponytails when possible, and try to avoid using elastic bands in your hair to reduce damage.

How to Get Thicker Hair for Women

Another tip for women looking to get thicker hair is to limit the number of times you shampoo your hair each week.  Shampoos too much can strip hair of its natural oils, which can leave it dry and more susceptible to damage.  Try to stick with shampooing your hair only two or three times a week.

And, every time you shampoo or get your hair wet, you should use conditioner.  Conditioner is designed to protect hair from becoming damaged, so using it every time your hair is wet is an excellent tip when you’re looking for how to grow thicker hair.

How to Get Thicker Hair for Men

Most of the tips shared above can also help men trying to make their hair look thicker. Another idea men can try is to switch to a volumizing shampoo. These shampoos are designed to make hair look more full, since they don’t weigh hair down like some other shampoos.

Switching the side your part is on may also help men who are trying to grow thicker hair.  If your part has always been on the same side (or has for years), it may be pressing the hair against your scalp.  Switching your part to the other side can lift the hair up from the scalp and help it look fuller.

Scientifically Proven Ways to Grow Thicker Hair

If you believe in following the science, there are some scientifically-backed ways that can help when you’re looking for how to thicken hair.

One is to use eggs.  Eggs, which are very high in protein, can help make a person’s hair thicker and stronger.

To use eggs to thicken your hair, beat two eggs together, apply them over damp hair and the scalp and let them sit there for about 30 minutes.  After 30 minutes, rinse the eggs off and wash hair using a mild shampoo and warm water.  Don’t forget to also condition your hair, since conditioner helps strengthen hair.

Eating a proper diet and getting the right nutrients, as we mentioned above, is also associated with growing thicker hair.  Some foods high in the vitamins and nutrients that can help hair grow include eggs, salmon, black bean, green beans, pinto beans, Greek yogurt, walnuts, and almonds.

How to Make Hair Thicker and Fuller Naturally Home Remedies

There are a number of home remedies you can try to make your hair thicker.  Many of these use items you likely already have around your house such as eggs, orange purée, avocado, castor oil, coconut oil, or olive oil.

One way you can use some of these ingredients together is to make a hair mask.  Mix together 4 teaspoons coconut oil and 6 teaspoons olive oil with 5 drops of lavender essential oil and 6 drops of rosemary essential oil. Apply the mixture to your hair and cover it with a shower cap.  Leave the oils and shower cap on your hair for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse your hair out and wash it with shampoo and conditioner.

This is a powerful home remedy.  The fatty acids and vitamin E in the coconut oil and olive oil work to hydrate and smooth hair, making it healthier and less likely to break.  The rosemary oil and lavender oil can help speed up the growth of new hair by stimulating the hair follicles.

FAQs

Why is my hair so thin?

Understanding hair anatomy and what can make hair thin may help you identify the underlying cause for your thin or thinning hair.  Some possible causes include stress, thyroid issues, age, hormones, genes, diet, or alopecia.

What stimulates thicker hair?

To stimulate hair growth and help your hair grow in thicker and more dense, make sure you’re not eating a restrictive diet lacking in the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy hair.  Also make sure you’re eating at least 50 grams of protein each day, as diets that are too low in protein can increase hair shedding.  Many vitamins and minerals have been associated with stimulating hair growth.  These include vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, biotin, iron, omega-3, omega-6, and zinc.  Getting a scamp massage may also help stimulate the growth of thicker hair by dilating the blood vessels.

What makes your hair thicker?

There are different ways to make your hair thicker and help it grow in stronger and more dense.  Some ideas to try include egg treatments, olive oil, eating a diet high in healthy fats, proteins, and vitamins, using avocado, or applying aloe oil to the scalp and hair.

How to tell if you have thick hair?

Sometimes it can be challenging to determine whether you have thick or thin hair. Part of the confusion is that the thickness of a strand of hair is actually referred to as how coarse or fine the hair is.  While, the term thick hair refers to how dense the hairs on your scalp are.  However, these two meanings are often confused, and you may see the word thick used to talk about both hair coarseness and hair density.
Coarse and fine hair can be distinguished based on their texture.  Coarse hair feels more textured and rough, while fine hair feels smoother.  Each strand or coarse hair will be much more visible than a strand of fine hair.  You should also be able to tell a difference between the thickness of the strand just by looking at the two hair types.
Now for thick vs. dense hair. You can have very fine hair, but still have dense hair.  Density refers to how many hairs are on your head and how closely packed in they are.  Denser hair is thicker than hairs that are more spread out on the scalp.

Is it possible to get thicker hair?

You can’t make the individual hair strands coarser, but you can increase the thickness and density of the hairs on your head by facilitating the growth of new hairs and preventing breakage and damage to your current hair strands.

  1. Couldn’t agree more, Sophie! External applications aren’t very useful when you don’t take care of yourself.

  2. Making sure you’re looking after yourself on the inside is so important when it comes to things like hair, skin and nails. And keeping a healthy scalp, I sometimes experience hair loss because my scalp is prone to dryness and an exfoliating shampoo is pretty much essential for me to both prevent loss and stimulate my scalp for new growth.
