Earlier this year was International Women’s Day. A day where we celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations; without regard to divisions like nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, economics or politics. There are amazing women everywhere in the world who are working hard to change the face of the environment in which we live.
In honor of this, and on the back of the high profile gender equality movement taking place right now in Hollywood, we wanted to pull together a list of powerful female figures featuring in your favorite Netflix shows. We know it’s a bit of a light-hearted slant to something serious and powerful, but even when we kick back, grab a glass of wine and curl up on the couch for the evening, we can celebrate powerful leading ladies.

Scandal
Scandal has been around for a while, but Olivia Pope never fails to disappoint. This white hat wearing female crusader has gone a little dark on us right now, but we’re sure Ms Pope will come back to the light pretty soon! A key figure in the White House, a political power in her own right, a successful business owner and loved intensely by many gorgeous men. Despite her unusual upbringing at the hands of her father, Olivia is one amazing girl boss.
In Scandal we also have Mellie Grant as the first female American President, Quinn Perkins as a business owner and new mum and Abby Whelan as former White House Chief of Staff. The Scandal women certainly don’t have it easy and sometimes their boundaries of right and wrong become a little grey, but their inner strengths are amazing.
They certainly beat the odds to come out on top.
How To Get Away With Murder
How to Get Away with Murder centers around lawyer Annalise Keating, a self-sufficient and confident woman. An apparently perfect life, scratch deeper and we find out that Annalise is extremely troubled and hides some pretty dark secrets. Another lady who crosses the line for all her wrongdoings.
It’s hard not to admire her for her work ethic, her strength to overcome the events in her life and her intelligence.
Modern Family
Modern Family is definitely much less dark! We wanted to give a shout out to Claire Dunphy who keeps it all together on a regular basis. Wife, mother of three and President of the family business, Claire juggles life on a daily basis.
Moreover, she never stops fighting for what she believes is right. Her competitive and perfectionist streak is endearing, as well as her lack of tact and brutal honesty.
The Cable Girls
The Cable Girls tells the tale of girl power in a bygone era. A Spanish period drama set in the 1920s, the series follows the life of four young women as they go against the social norm and all get jobs working for a telecommunications company. The show follows the hardships that working women faced during this era.
Women hadn’t yet gained the right to vote in Spain, were under the control of father’s and husband’s and had very little legal rights. The four main characters Alba, Carlota, Angeles and Marga are very different, but form an unbreakable bond.
Other great shows to catch with strong female leads are Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin.
