How Can I Fix My Hair if I Dyed It Too Dark at a Salon?

I colored my hair too dark what can I do to lighten it?  You’re certainly not the only one to be facing this problem.  If you want to find the answers to “how do you strip dye out of your hair” or “how to lighten permanent hair color that is too dark,” we’ve put together a few ideas you can try in the next few sections.

How Do You Make Dyed Hair Lighter?

Here are a few different things you can try to fix your hair color if it turned out too dark.

Wash Your Hair Right Away

It can take 72 hours for a new hair color to fully set it, so taking a shower right away may help remove some of the dye.  Continue washing it every day for at least a week if you really want to lighten the color.

Special Shampoo

Using a lightening shampoo or clarifying shampoo, instead of your everyday shampoo, can help remove more of the day.  When washing your hair with a clarifying or lightening shampoo, be sure to apply a good amount to your hair and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing.

Baking Soda

Wondering about hair dye too dark baking soda remedy?  Mixing baking soda and lemon juice can create a DIY lightening shampoo.  Combine the two ingredients, get your hair wet, and apply the solution to your hair.  Leave the baking soda and lemon juice on your hair for 40 to 50 minutes, then rinse it off using warm water.

Just be careful not to use this DIY shampoo too frequently.  The lemon juice is very acidic and may damage the hair.

Vitamin C Powder

Crushing vitamin C tablets and mixing the powder in with your shampoo can also help to lighten your hair color.  Vitamin C is acidic, allowing it to remove some of the color from your hair.  After applying the shampoo/vitamin C to your hair, let it sit for 60 minutes before rinsing out your hair.  Keep in mind that this method can also dry out or damage hair, so you won’t want to use it too frequently.

How Long Does It Take for Dark Dyed Hair to Fade?

Another option is to simply wait for the color to fade on its own.  If you’re wondering how long hair dye lasts, it can vary.  Though, in most cases it will take between two and three months for the color to face.  After the color has faded, you can always choose a new color to try.

If you want to fade the color more quickly yourself, be careful not to damage your hair.  How do you fade hair dye without damaging it?  Consider trying one of the approaches we shared above or heading back to the salon to have a professional help you.

How Long Do You Have to Wait Before Dyeing Your Hair Again?

I dyed my hair too dark when can I dye it again?  At a minimum, you should wait at least 15 days to recolor your hair.  Typically, the time between coloring appointments is between four and six weeks.  However, if you are not happy with the color you have, you might not want to wait that long.
