What is oVertone?

oVertone is a color-depositing conditioner.  The company was founded by Maegan Scarlett and Liora Dudar.  The pair were frustrated after constantly dealing with fading hair color and all the damage that came along with dyeing their hair.  Because they couldn’t find the type of hair coloring product that they wanted, they decided to make it on their own.

Unlike many other hair coloring products, it is not a hair dye and doesn’t need to be used alongside developer.

Rather, oVertone is a pigmented conditioner.  When you take a shower and condition your hair using oVertone, the color pigments are deposited on your hair.  This results in colored hair.

Hair dyes are formulated with a lot of different chemicals and are known for drying out the hair.  If you’ve ever had your hair dyed, you know how dry, frizzy, and generally unhealthy it can become.

oVertone, on the other hand, is designed to improve your hair’s health.  It is formulated with nourishing ingredients, such as shea butter, coconut oil, and avocado oil.

Two of the main product lines from oVertone are the Coloring Conditioners and the Daily Conditioners

The Coloring Conditioners are the ones that you should use the first time you want to color your hair.  They have the greatest pigment concentration and will deliver the most noticeable results.  If you’re trying to keep your hair color, oVertone recommends using a Coloring Conditioner about once a week.

The Daily Conditioners, as you can probably guess, are designed to be used with each shower to help deposit a little more color on your hair.  Their formula is a bit more gentle and suitable for daily use to help maintain both the health of your hair and your hair color.

Does oVertone Wash Out Completely?

Yes, oVertone will wash out completely.

However, as we’ll get into below, the exact amount of time it will take for oVertone to wash out of your hair can vary based on a number of factors.

Does oVertone Fade?

Yes, oVertone will fade overtime.  The rate at which it fades will vary, however.  Your original hair color and texture, the oVertone color you choose, and how frequently you wash your hair will all impact how long it takes oVertone to fade and eventually fully wash out of your hair.

Can I Dye My Hair After Using oVertone?

Yes, you can dye your hair after using oVertone.  The makers of the product even encourage users to try different combinations of their color-depositing conditioners to create a unique effect.

If you’d like to use a permanent hair dye after using oVertone, it should work fine.  However, you may want to consult with your hairstylist to make sure that there aren’t any issues specific to your hair or hair type to consider.

How Long Does oVertone Last?

The length of time that oVertone will last depends on a few different factors.  These can include your natural hair color, the oVertone color you selected, the texture and porosity of your hair, how frequently you wash your hair, and the type of shampoo you use.

In many cases, you can expect most of the color to wash out within about two weeks.  However, remember that it may take longer depending on your hair.

If you used the ginger oVertone color though, be prepared for it to stick around a bit longer.  Many users who have tried ginger oVertone have shared that the color lasted a long time and was more difficult to fade or remove than other colors.

How to Get oVertone Out of Hair

OK, so you’re ready to get oVertone out of your hair.  Whether you have just had enough of your current color or recently tried a new oVertone color, and it didn’t turn out how you expected, you want to find the quickest and most effective solution to remove the color from your hair.

Removing oVertone can be a bit of a process.  The pigments in the conditioner are designed to last for a long time, so it may take some time and effort to get the oVertone out of your hair.

Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to get oVertone out of your hair.

Clarifying Shampoo

Will clarifying shampoo remove oVertone?  Yes, using a clarifying shampoo is one way to get oVertone out of your hair.  Choose a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo and wash your hair frequently until the color fades enough that you’re satisfied with the results.  After using a clarifying shampoo, condition your hair with a hydrating conditioner to prevent it from getting too dried out.

oVertone recommends applying their Fader Clarifying Shampoo to wet hair.  After applying the shampoo, lather it thoroughly through your hair, from the roots to the tip.  Let it sit for about two minutes before rinsing.  After washing hair with the Fader Clarifying Shampoo, oVertone recommends using The Remedy Colorless Hair Mask to deliver hydration back to your hair.  According to oVertone’s websites, follow these steps about once or twice each week to gradually fade the color.

Olive Oil Mask

You can also try using an olive oil mask to remove oVertone from your hair.  To make an olive oil mask, add ¼ cup olive oil to a microwave-safe dish.  Warm the oil in the microwave for 10 seconds.  Check the temperature and add a few more seconds if needed, but take care not to make the oil too hot.

Once warmed, stir the olive oil and double check that the temperature isn’t too hot.  Wear old clothing, and apply the olive oil to one section of your hair at a time.  As you apply it, massage it into the hair.  Place a shower cap over your hair and let the olive oil sit for approximately 35 to 45 minutes.  Then, remove the shower cap, and wash your hair as normal.

Olive oil masks can help remove oVertone because they help to confine the pigment by sticking to the hairs.  If needed, you can repeat the olive oil mask treatment after a few days to remove more of the color.

Liquid Laundry Soap

Another idea is to try using liquid laundry soap to remove oVertone.  Apply liquid laundry soap to wet hair and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes.  After 10 minutes, wash the soap out of your hair.  Repeat washing your hair with the laundry soap once each day for a week, and you should notice that the color has faded significantly.

However, there is a downside to using liquid laundry soap.  Obviously, this type of soap isn’t designed for use on your hair.  It can be very drying and may cause your hair to be frizzy.  If you want to try using liquid laundry soap, make sure that you hydrate your hair with a deep conditioner after each washing session.

Head and Shoulders with Baking Soda

Mixing Head and Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo and baking soda can also be effective at fading oVertone from your hair.

The baking soda helps to lighten the color and, when combined with the shampoo, helps to wash it out from your hair.  Wash your hair daily with a mixture of Head and Shoulders and baking soda, then follow up with a deep conditioner to keep your hair moisturized.

Vitamin C and Shampoo

You can also try mixing crushed vitamin C with your shampoo.  Vitamin C can help to remove the pigments deposited from the oVertone to help fade the color.

Hydrating Shampoo Mixed with Developer

If you still haven’t had any luck removing the oVertone from your hair, try mixing a 20-volume developer with moisturizing shampoo.  Apply the mixture to your hair and let it sit for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes has passed, rinse all of the mixture out of your hair.  Apply a deep conditioner to your hair to keep it healthy and moisturized.

The reason this mixture works to remove oVertone is that the developer opens the cuticle up.  Once the cuticle is open, the pigments that were deposited from the oVertone are stripped out.

A word of caution:  this method is best for people who have generally healthy hair.  It is not advisable to try if your hair is already dry, frizzy, or over-processed because the developer could end up doing more harm than good.

Finally, if nothing else works and you can’t get enough of the oVertone out of your hair, consider scheduling an appointment with your stylist.  They can either help you remove or re-color your hair, or at least can steer you in the right direction to get the color out of your hair.

How to Get oVertone Out of Hair: FAQs

Does oVertone wash out?

Yes. oVertone will wash out of your hair eventually.  However, it can take a while depending on your hair type, texture, porosity, and original color.  The oVertone color you chose can also impact how quickly it will wash out of your hair.  You may notice a slight color residue for a while, even after most of the color has washed out.  Using a toning conditioner can help neutralize any residue that is left behind.

Will oVertone wash out of virgin hair?

Individuals with virgin hair tend to notice that their oVertone color fades more quickly than those with processed or chemically-treated hair types.  Virgin hair’s cuticle is more tightly closed than the hair cuticle on processed hair types.  Because of this, the pigments from the oVertone are only dispositive on top of each strand of hair, rather than within the cuticle.

Does oVertone wash out of blonde hair?

Yes, oVertone will eventually wash out of blonde hair.  However, it can take a while because blonde hair is much lighter and displays more vibrant colors than other natural hair colors.  You may also notice that you have some color residue on your blonde hair after most of the oVertone has washed out.  Using a toning conditioner can be effective to neutralize the brassiness.

Does oVertone cause hair loss?

The vast majority of users do not experience any issues with hair loss.  However, there are a few customer reviews that mention that they noticed that some of their hair started falling out after using oVertone.

Will color Oops remove oVertone?

Color Oops isn’t the most effective at removing oVertone.  It is designed to work on oxidative dyes that are mixed with developer.  oVertone is not an oxidative dye, so it may not be as effective at removing it.  You can try using Color Oops to remove oVertone, but you may have more luck trying one of the suggestions shared above instead.
