Why Am I Shedding So Much Hair?

Have you been asking yourself “why is my hair shedding so much” when you’re brushing your hair or taking a shower?  Before we address hair shedding, let’s take a moment to distinguish it from hair loss.

Hair shedding is absolutely normal.  On average, most humans lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day. With an average of about 150,000 hairs on our head, even shedding 100 hairs isn’t really a big deal.  It represents less than 1% of all of the hairs on our head.

The causes behind hair loss and hair shedding are also quite different.  Causes of hair loss include heredity, medical conditions, changes in hormones, and normal changes associated with aging,

As we shared above, shedding some hair every day is completely normally, but if you’re noticing an increase in the number of hairs your head is shedding, there are a few possible reasons this may be happening:

  • Stress: Stress is one of the top answers to the question “why is my hair shedding so much.”  Stress can cause all sorts of changes in our body, one of which is causing more hairs to shed from our scalp.  This is because when we are stressed, it can push hair follicles to the phase in their cycle when they begin shedding.  Stress first stops our hair from growing and then causes it to shed, approximately three months later, due to hair growth cycles.  This means if your hair is shedding now, it may be tied to a stressful event about three months ago.
  • Seasonal Shedding:  You may be familiar with seasonal shedding for animals, but humans also go through seasonal shedding.  We generally shed the greatest number of hairs in the fall and early spring.  The colder weather during these months can make our hair and scalp drier, which can trigger more shedding.
  • Chemical Shedding:  Coloring your hair or getting other chemical treatments can weaken hair and make it more brittle.  This makes hair more likely to break, which can increase shedding eventually as well.  Chemicals can also damage your scalp.  This can weaken the hair follicles and make them more likely to shed.
  • Overstyling: Overstyling leads to more hair breakage, which is sometimes confused with shedding. However, it is different. Hair breakage is when the hairs break off midway down the strand, not when the entire strand sheds from the root. Using hot styling tools or rubber elastic bands to make tight hairstyles can contribute to hair breakage.

Why Does My Hair Shed so Much?

Why is my hair falling out? The answer is:  it depends.

As we shared above, some shedding is normal (up to about 100 hairs a day).  Excessive shedding beyond this amount can be caused by a variety of factors including stress, season changes, chemical treatments and coloring, and overstyling.  Hair loss can sometimes be associated with medical conditions, such as Lupus, thyroid conditions, and nutritional deficiencies.  It can also be caused by hormones, medications, stress, and aging.

Hair Shedding After Relaxer

Why am I shedding after a relaxer?  Relaxers are a chemical hair treatment which deposit calcium onto hair.  The calcium can cause hair to dry out and become more brittle.  This can cause hair breakage.

An additional answer to the question “why is my hair shedding a lot after a relaxer” is that relaxers can leave the cuticle layer of the hair open after processing.  This can increase hair shedding as well.

How Long Does It Take for Hair to Stop Shedding?

Since some hair shedding is always normal, it won’t ever stop completely.  However, if you’re dealing with an increase in hair shedding from stress, losing a lot of weight, illness, or another cause, your body will eventually readjust and return to typical hair shedding levels.

This process generally takes between six and nine months.

When Does Hair Shed the Most?

There are a few different events that can trigger increased hair shedding.  These include stress, chemical treatments, overstyling, losing more than 20 pounds, high fevers, illnesses, operations, having a baby, and discontinuing birth control pills.  Our bodies also go through natural shedding seasons in the fall and early spring, where the amount of hair we shed is increased.

Does Shedding Mean Your Hair is Growing?

Yes, if you’re experiencing hair shedding, and not hair loss, your hair is still growing.  This is one of the main differences between hair loss and shedding.  With hair loss, something prevents the hairs from growing anymore.  With hair shedding, you are losing more hair than is typical, but your hairs continue to grow.

Oooh my god actually I started to suffer hair loosing back in the first lockdown and I was a little bit scared, maybe stress has to do a little bit with that. But then I realized some small tricks like using hair dryer away from my scalp and the fact that diet and getting a good sleep are also good resources, as you well said.

I loved that you included a natural remedy but also interesting products like the Kerating mask 😉 And you’re right, getting nice gentle tools are also important, it is crucial like getting the right shampoo for your hair, right?
