If I Cut My Eyelashes, Will They Grow Back?

The most common question people ask when they accidentally – or even purposefully – cut or break their eyelashes is if they’ll grow back. And it’s perfectly normal to be concerned. After all, if you’ve never seen someone without eyelashes or with exceptionally short eyelashes, it can be a little discerning at first.

Luckily, the answer is relatively simple. According to research on eyelash growth, you’re not eternally doomed.

Typically speaking, you’ll lose a few eyelashes every day. Your eyelashes will always grow back, but growing a full-length lash takes about a month.

However, this is just a standard estimate.

For some individuals, lash growth happens faster.

If you’ve accidentally cut your eyelashes and are looking for ways to make them grow back more quickly, there are a variety of helpful tips and tricks you can use, such as:

  • Consider applying coconut oil or castor oil to your eyelashes using a mascara wand. The hydration and vitamins in these oils help lashes grow faster and promote long, healthy lash growth.
  • Stay hydrated! Hydration is an important part of healthy hair, skin and nails – and this includes your eyelashes!
  • Maintain a well-balanced diet. When you eat well and stay healthy, your skin is healthier and your hair grows faster, helping improve the speed at which your lashes grow.
  • Take a break from wearing makeup too frequently. Wearing eye makeup can damage your eyelashes and irritate the skin, which can cause your lashes to grow more slowly.
  • Consider taking prenatal vitamins, which often help make your hair grow faster as they are full of nutrients.

These are just a few ways you can help your eyelashes grow back nice and long, and faster than on average.

Your experience and the time it takes your lashes to grow back to their original length may vary, so don’t get frustrated if it takes some time for it to happen.

Does Cutting Your Eyelashes Make Them Grow Back Longer?

Now that you know that you can regrow your eyelashes, you might wonder if cutting them off is beneficial to growth.

In theory, this makes sense – it’s kind of like how when you cut away the dead ends on your hair, it often grows faster because it’s healthier. However, eyelashes are a little different, and you may not like the results.

It’s hard to say for sure if your eyelashes grow back longer when you cut them, simply because the precise length of your eyelashes can be somewhat hard to measure.

However, from what we can tell based on the research done on eyelash growth, cutting off your eyelashes doesn’t usually make them grow back longer.

Plus, if you frequently cut your eyelashes, you’re more likely to make them weaker over time. The average person typically loses around three to four eyelashes in a day. If you cut your lashes, they may become damaged, causing them to fall out or break more easily.

Ultimately, damaged eyelashes are far less healthy than regular eyelashes, so frequently cutting or trimming your natural eyelashes can lead to stunted growth and breakage. Also, eyelashes are relatively important outside of their aesthetic purposes. You may not have given it much thought, but your eyelashes help protect your eyes from dust, dirt, sweat and other debris.

Can I Shave My Eyelashes?

People also often ask about shaving their eyelashes to reduce their length and help them grow over time. Many individuals seem to think that the concept of shaving your eyelashes is similar to cutting them.

As we previously discussed, purposefully cutting your eyelashes isn’t a great idea, as it can cause damage. Shaving them, however, is a little different.

Shaving, generally speaking, allows you to sheer off your hair. It seems fairly logical, simply because we often shave our legs, faces, armpits and even our eyebrows. However, shaving your eyelashes comes with a whole different host of problems, such as:

  • Increased risk of eye irritation from shorter eyelashes.
  • Potential to scratch or cut the eyelid or the surface of the eye, which can result in damage or even blindness.
  • Causing eyelashes to split, which can increase the potential for breakage and damages the lashes.
  • Ability to potential damage the lash follicle, which can result in a lack of growth moving forward.
  • Slower or stunted growth.

The primary concern in this case, of course, is that you can potentially cause damage to your eye if you are not careful when trying to shave your eyelashes. In some cases, a professional may shave or trim eyelash extensions when applying them. However, these individuals have received dozens of hours of training on how to use tools made explicitly for fake eyelashes and lash extensions. They are professionals in the field and understand the necessary safety requirements for trimming and shaving down lashes.

Ultimately, shaving your eyelashes won’t cause them not to grow back. In general, though, it’s not the best idea. It can cause damage to the lashes, and the risk of accidentally injuring yourself is too high.

What Can Cause You To Cut Your Lashes Accidentally?

Will your eyelashes grow back if cut off? Yes, luckily, they’ll grow back just like any other hair on your body will.

However, now that we’ve calmed your fears about potentially losing your eyelashes forever, it’s time to learn how you can accidentally cut your lashes.

After all, despite the fact they will grow back, there are habits you’ll want to avoid so that you don’t accidentally give yourself super short eyelashes.

Trimming or Removing False Lashes Incorrectly

One of the worst ways you can accidentally trim your natural eyelashes is when trying to cut or remove eyelash extensions.

When you put on eyelash extensions, you may find they’re just a little too long and go to shorten them. As a part of the extension process, this makes sense. However, it’s all too easy to trim too far accidentally, causing you to cut your natural lashes.

Additionally, we’ve talked about breakage a few times now. When removing eyelash extensions, some people attempt to pluck the falsies off. If your eyelashes were previously unknowingly damaged, you could accidentally break them, causing them to become much shorter.

Eyelash Curlers

One of the biggest mistakes people make when using an eyelash curler is to pull or yank on their lashes.

It’s more common than you’d think – many individuals don’t know how to use their eyelash curlers correctly.

If you pinch your eyelashes and pull, you may go from long, curly lashes to an accidental lash trim. Therefore, using no pinch, no pull eyelash curler is better, both for the safety of your lashes and for dramatic effect.

Using the Incorrect Tools

Suppose you’ve recently gotten eyelash extensions and need to trim them. In that case, you want to avoid using scissors – they’re imprecise for trimming your lashes, which is how you can accidentally trim way too far and cut your natural lashes.

However, many companies make lash scissors for that exact reason. Consider purchasing a pair to help avoid unfortunate mistakes in the future.

Taking Off Eye Makeup Incorrectly

Eye makeup is great fun in the long run, and almost everyone loves it.

When it comes to removing eye makeup, though, there are right and wrong ways to do it. Mascara, in particular, can be challenging to remove and bad for your eyelashes.

When trying to remove it, plenty of people end up scrubbing, pulling and tugging at their lashes, resulting in breakage.

If you want to learn how to remove mascara correctly and without causing damage, check out our post on how to remove mascara the right way.

Do eyelashes grow back: A Conclusion

Accidents happen, and we all know it’s true. Thankfully, if you’ve accidentally cut your eyelashes, they’ll likely grow back within the next month or so.

If you’re really concerned about the way you look in the meantime, consider purchasing lash growth serum, like the Borboleta Lash Serum, or using organic products to help speed up the growth process.

Alternatively, educate yourself on eyelash extensions.

Just remember – short eyelashes aren’t forever, and they will grow back if you cut them.

  1. You won’t lose the rest of your lashes, they’ll be back to normal after a while! In the meantime, best to wear some falsies to even it out, if you’re worried, otherwise just wait and be patient!

  2. Ok,so this horrid thing happened with me.I tried cutting the dead ends of my forehead hair, and i accidentally cut some of my eyelashes.I’m afraid that i’ll lose the rest of my eyelashes,What am i supposed to do?

  3. Ouch, that sounds painful and unfortunate! Definitely a great reminder to be careful when handling one’s lashes. Thanks for sharing, too, Aimsy!

  4. I remember my friend pulling out half of her eyelashes on one eye with an eyelash curler accident…let’s just say, try not to sneeze when curling your lashes! She wore fake eyelashes for quite a while whilst they grew back. I didn’t realise that you lose about 3-4 a day naturally. Definitley will be looking into removing mascara properly now!

    Thanks for sharing!
